16th Avenue Boardwalk Construction

Please be advised that the Mayor and Council have undertaken a project to provide a year-round bathroom located on the East side of the boardwalk across from the intersection of 16th Ave and Ocean Ave. Belmar received over $1.5 million from New Jersey's Boardwalk Preservation Fund in early 2024, administered by the NJ Department of Community Affairs (DCA), to enhance storm resilience, improve ADA access, and create permanent facilities, including new restrooms and upgraded infrastructure, funded by federal American Rescue Plan funds to boost tourism and safety for the iconic Jersey Shore boardwalk..  We are writing to you today to provide you with information about this project.

The project includes:

New construction of toilet room facilities on the ocean side of the Belmar Boardwalk at 16th Ave. and Ocean Avenue. The project includes all new pilling foundations, floor plate raised above the floodplain as required by FEMA and the Borough of Belmar code, all new framed construction, roofing, and mechanical systems, plumbing, fixtures, and interior finishes. The project also includes new water, sewer, electric and gas services for the new building.  Demolition and construction of parts of the existing boardwalk as required for the construction of the new toilet room building are also included.

The project has received all required regulatory permits. The work is planned to begin on or about January 12, 2026, and be conducted over the next several months.  Boardwalk and Ocean Avenue will be open for the respective vehicle and pedestrian traffic during most times, however there may be times when the Boardwalk will be closed, and roadway travel lanes may be decreased to single lane alternating traffic or possibly a temporary road closure and detour.  The contractor and our inspectors will notify you in advance of any planned interruption to the public.

Should you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Chief Inspector, George Allan of Remington and Vernick Engineers at (732) 955-8000 or the contractors at Catel Inc. at (732) 570-3020.
