No more rooting through your glove compartment or searching under your seat looking for quarters. Belmar is intalling new boardwalk meters that will accept pre-paid cards in addition to quarters. Slide the pre-paid Belmar parking card into the diagonal slot in the meter, and the display on the meter will start to count: “1 Hour, 2 Hours, etc.” Just pull the card out when it displays the number of hours you want to park, and the correct amount (at $1 per hour) will automatically be deducted from your card. If you decide you want to stay longer, you can use either a pre-paid card or quarters to buy more time.
The Borough plans to sell the pre-paid parking cards in denominations of $5 and $20 at each of the beach badge booths on the boardwalk. This will be welcome news to our beachfront business owners, many of whom have been making change for parking meters (and lugging around sacks of quarters) for years. The Borough also plans to offer Belmar business owners the opportunity to sell the pre-paid cards in their stores, which should help draw customer traffic.
And don’t worry if you don’t have a pre-paid card, or if your card is low on money. The meters will still accept quarters. The Borough is also exploring technology that will enable balances on the cards to be replenished.
Please note that the pre-paid cards will be governed by the same rules as the Borough’s beach badges, which means that the Borough is not responsible for lost or stolen pre-paid cards, and the cards are not refundable.
