The Mayor’s Wellness Committee in Belmar recently helped area youth learn the importance of safety when it comes to skateboarding.
Last Saturday, the Mayor’s Wellness Committee hosted a skate park safety clinic at the recently built skate park located on 16th Avenue, in Belmar.
The skate park safety clinic, which was free to the public, provided healthy snacks and water for those skateboarding, as well as the chance to win helmets for skateboarding and bicycling through raffles.
Many members of the Mayor’s Wellness Committee were in attendance, including Belmar Councilwoman Claire Deicke, Belmar resident Christine Stoner, who is a member of the committee and also works part time as a health counselor, and Belmar resident Connie Gutierrez, who is a member of the committee and manager of marketing for Health Net.
“I am lucky to have them,” said Councilwoman Deicke, of Ms. Stoner and Ms. Gutierrez.
Councilwoman Deicke also noted that Mike Campbell, the recreation director for the borough and also a member of the committee, has helped with many of the borough’s events in the past, including helping to advertise for Saturday’s safety clinic.
Ms. Gutierrez explained that Health Net is an organization that helps to promote health and wellness, as well as provides safety information to the community of Belmar.
“Belmar has recently opened a new skateboarding park, so we thought it would be a great idea to provide information to parents and kids,” she said.
Ms. Stoner said while the borough wants to provide “fun” for the local youth, the “at-risk” factors for not wearing a helmet when partaking in activities such as skateboarding are “enormous.”
Councilwoman Deicke said that the mayor and council is also considering the idea of having youth, who wish to use the skate park, become registered. Participants of the skate park would then get a sticker to wear on their helmet, said the councilwoman.
Ralph Rossano, 12, of West Belmar, who has been skateboarding since he was 8, said that he felt it was important to wear a helmet while partaking in the activity, “so you don’t fall and hit your head and crack it open.”
Tim Smith, 12, also of West Belmar, who said he has been skateboarding for 7 years, said that he thought it was a good idea that the committee was hosting a safety clinic.
“They are trying to make sure everyone wears a helmet so they don’t get hurt,” he said.
Many of the youth who were skateboarding on Saturday realized while they could have fun, they also needed to stay safe.
Kaleb Heltke, 10, of West Belmar, said that he truly enjoys skateboarding and always wears a helmet.
“I think it is fun,” he said. “A lot of kids skate and they can teach you tricks and help you out.”
The Mayor’s Wellness Committee will also be hosting a health fair for area residents on Oct. 10 at the Taylor Pavilion, said Councilwoman Deicke.
Additionally, in the past, the committee has also reached out to the community through other areas.
The councilwoman noted that Ms. Stoner has reached out to the St. Rose and Belmar Elementary School PTA with speaking to them on proper nutrition for children. The committee has also held several walks in the area, including on the boardwalk, to promote a healthier lifestyle.

More than a hundred residents and skaters turned out on Thursday evening for a cook-out to celebrate the opening of the new Belmar-Taurosa Family Skate Park, and to thank all those who helped make it a reality. Barry and the Penetrators provided great music for the event. (In between sets, they even tried out the new park with their skateboards!) Bill Merkler, Dave Kinsel and Rob Wall took turns at the grill, cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs for all the hungry skaters and their families who were in attendance.
Former Councilman Bill Merkler, who led the effort to raise money for the part, took the microphone for a few minutes to thank all those who helped make the new park a reality. He gave special thanks to to Bob and Carol Taurosa, whose very substantial contribution toward the park made the effort a reality, and in whose honor the Belmar-Taurosa Family Skate Park has been named. He also gave thanks to the Mayor & Council for their support for the project; to Borough Administrator Robbin Kirk, who was instrumental in making the park a reality; to Superintendent Andy Meuerle and the Department of Public Works for their efforts in installing new fencing around the park, and to Bob Losito of the Proskateboard Shop, who gave invaluable design advice and other technical assistance for the park. Bill Merkler also thanked all those who made contributions large and small to help make the park a reality.

The new Belmar Skate Park has only been open for a week, and it’s already a huge hit with skateboarders of all ages. From 9 a.m. each day until the park is closed at dusk, there are a dozen or more skaters using the park’s ramps to work on their latest moves. The new $71,000 park was built by the American Ramp Company, and includes a half-pipe ramp at one end of the park, a quarter-pipe ramp at the other, and a pyramid with euro gap and grind rail in the center. The park is located in Dempsey Park on Sixteenth Avenue, east of the railroad.
The new skate park is the fruit of a 3-year fundraising effort led by former Councilman William Merkler. In addition to generous donations from a number of Belmar residents and local businesses, numerous community fundraisers were held over the years, and the proceeds of the 2007 Mayor’s Ball were also contributed to the cause. In addition to Mr. Merkler and the Department of Public Works, special thanks go to Bob Losito, the owner of the Proskateboard Shop, at 1108 Main Street in Belmar, who provided invaluable assistance during the design phase of the effort, and to Borough Administrator Robbin Kirk, who has spent countless hours over the past several years handling the financial, bidding and insurance issues related to the project.

All work has been completed at the skatepark and the final inspection has been done. The skatepark will open on Saturday June 13th.
The Borough’s DPW staff has worked feverishly to get Belmar’s new skate park ready to open. Workers from the American Ramp Company, the successful bidder on the $71,000 modular-ramp park, finished assembling the ramp system last week. The new equipment includes a half-pipe ramp at one end of the park, a quarter-pipe ramp at the other, and a pyramid with euro gap and grind rail in the center.
The DPW staff has raised the height of the fence surrounding the park to 8′ feet, a requirement of the Borough’s joint insurance fund. This effort was delayed due to the bad weather. All work has been completed and final inspections are done.

DPW employees prepare to weld pipe extensions to raise the height of the fence around the skate park to 8 feet. Pictured are DPW employees Rob Page, Bill Musto and Nino Rosa.
