More than a hundred residents and skaters turned out on Thursday evening for a cook-out to celebrate the opening of the new Belmar-Taurosa Family Skate Park, and to thank all those who helped make it a reality. Barry and the Penetrators provided great music for the event. (In between sets, they even tried out the new park with their skateboards!) Bill Merkler, Dave Kinsel and Rob Wall took turns at the grill, cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs for all the hungry skaters and their families who were in attendance.
Former Councilman Bill Merkler, who led the effort to raise money for the part, took the microphone for a few minutes to thank all those who helped make the new park a reality. He gave special thanks to to Bob and Carol Taurosa, whose very substantial contribution toward the park made the effort a reality, and in whose honor the Belmar-Taurosa Family Skate Park has been named. He also gave thanks to the Mayor & Council for their support for the project; to Borough Administrator Robbin Kirk, who was instrumental in making the park a reality; to Superintendent Andy Meuerle and the Department of Public Works for their efforts in installing new fencing around the park, and to Bob Losito of the Proskateboard Shop, who gave invaluable design advice and other technical assistance for the park. Bill Merkler also thanked all those who made contributions large and small to help make the park a reality.
