Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty has been invited to attend the 81st Annual Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors, an event highlighted by an address to the nation’s mayors from Vice President Joe Biden. Mayor Doherty is one of over 200 mayors from around the country in attendance at the meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada this weekend, which will also include his remarks on the topic "After Sandy: The New Jersey Beaches Are Open" this Saturday, June 22.
“This weekend will be a tremendous opportunity to attend workshops, discuss issues with mayors and bring some of those tools back to Belmar for the benefit of our residents,” said Doherty. ”I am also extremely proud to have been asked to speak about the remarkable post-Sandy recovery efforts underway throughout the New Jersey Shore region. While the devastation of Sandy will be felt on some level for many years to come throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties, I am looking forward to the opportunity to speak with mayors from across the country about the way the area’s mayors came together with state, county and local officials in coordination with so many of the region’s impacted residents and small business owners to recover and repair as quickly as possible. While there is still much work to be done, the beaches are open and the tourism dollars they bring are flowing through to communities throughout the region. It is that steady flow of revenue in conjunction with continued state and federal cooperation that will allow us to continue rebuilding and make sure people get back in their homes and businesses get back on their feet.”
