14.8% of women were victims of sexual assault at some point in their lifetime
2.8% of women were victims of attempted sexual assault as some point during their lifetime
8.7 sexual assaults take place per 1000 population

Most sexual assaults are not reported to the police.  36% sexual assaults, 34% attempted sexual assaults were reported to the police between 1992-2000

Reasons for not reporting to the police:

The closer the relationship between the female victim and the offender, the greater likelihood that the police would not be told about the sexual assualt.

When the offender was a current or former husband or boyfriend 3/4 of all victimizations are not reported to the police

When the offender weas a friend or acquaintenance, 61% were not reported to the police

When the offender was a stranger, 54% were not reported to the police.
