In 1888 on New Year‘s Eve, James Freeborns Market burned down. The Masonic Hall, which occupied the top floor, was completely destroyed and by dawn of the New Year an entire block on 9th Avenue between “F” street and the railroad lay in smoldering ruins. Damages at that time totaled over $20,000. This worried property owners who circulated a petition seeking a Bond Issue of $5,000 to purchase a “Steam” fire engine. The Bond Issue was voted on February 19th 1889 and in June of that year a bright yellow fire engine came to town. Prior to the fire, The Ocean Beach Association, (Belmar), owned a small hook and ladder wagon, purchased on April 10th 1883. At the time this was manned by the unorganized men available in the community who were given water barrels and buckets which were kept ready in each family‘s “back entry” or wood shed.
On January 31st 1889 Union Fire Company was organized and incorporated. Two other fire companies followed, Volunteer Hook and Ladder in February 1894 and Goodwill Hose Company in January 1901. Also that year the 1st official ordinance creating a Fire Department was adopted. The three fire companies worked in close harmony combining their efforts at every fire, Union would operate the “Steam Engine”, Hook & Ladder provided tools and ladders, and Goodwill provided the hose lines. |

We have a New Jersey Transit Commuter Rail Line, which runs through the heart of town and we are also home to the largest Municipal owned Marina in the State, which docks private and commercial owned vessels.
The Borough itself is surrounded by water on three sides, The Atlantic Ocean to the east, Shark River Inlet to the north and Shark River to the west. Population fluctuates dramatically between seasons giving the Borough Approximately 9000 people during the winter months and upwards of 70,000 during the summer.
