The position of law enforcement has evolved over the years into a highly respected profession with well-educated and skillfully trained individuals included in its ranks. With the constantly growing dangers, duties and liabilities instilled upon every law enforcement officer today comes the increase in salaries, benefits and training opportunities. The following information outlines the career opportunities found within the Belmar Police Department.
SALARY
As of December 31, 2007 all newly hired entry-level Officers shall receive a starting base salary of $29,744 which will increase yearly with a current top pay of $84,539 which will be reached after nine salary step increases. In addition to these wages, an educational incentive of $750 for an Associates Degree and $1000 for Bachelors Degree added to your base salary.
BENEFITS
Each full-time sworn member of the Belmar Police Department shall receive full benefits in accordance with the present contract, which shall include a major medical health plan, a prescription medication plan, and group life insurance as part of either the Police and Fire Retirement or Public Employee Retirement Systems. In addition to these advantages, each newly appointed Officer are entitled to twelve vacation days, twelve days for sickness and two days personal leave.
TRAINING
Every newly appointed Officer shall have their tuition and salary paid for by the Borough of Belmar while they attend the Monmouth County Police Academy or other Police Training Commission accredited police academy for the basic police training class. Upon graduating from the class and completion of a supervised Field Training Program, each new officer shall be assigned to the patrol division.
FEDERAL AND STATE GUIDELINES
Presently there are no controlling federal or state statutes restricting the recruitment and selection of sworn personnel except for the Department of Personnel requirements outlined below. We are seeking educated; professional and well disciplined individuals of all races, genders and religions.
CHARACTERISTICS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT
To apply for employment with the Belmar Police Department, an individual must fulfill to following:
1. Must successfully complete the civil service entry exam conducted by the New Jersey State Department of Personnel.
2. Be a citizen of the United States.
3. Be a resident of the State of New Jersey and the Borough of Belmar.
4. Possess a high school diploma or be in possession of an approved High School Equivalency Certificate.
5. Be at least eighteen years of age.
6. Pass a thorough background investigation, medical examination, and psychological examination to include drug screening.
7. Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
8. Successfully complete a Basic Police Course at a selected Police Training Academy.
If an individual does not possess the above qualifications or the characteristics to attain the above attributes, they shall not be considered for employment with the Belmar Police Department.
