Fit Walk Route planning

Belmar Recreation will be meeting interested persons on the boardwalk in front of the Belmar Fishing Club starting Monday March 15  at 11:00. The purpose will be to measure different routes with  Belmar residents using a Rolatape. This will assist people in setting goals and distances for walks or jogging and helping them keep accurate times and distances to mark improvement.

Our goal is to get you moving in a positive direction towards better health. The walks can start in Belmar and go in any reasonable direction and distance. If you have specific needs please plan ahead and call Michael Campbell at 732-681 3700 dial 9 then 211.

Weather permitting we will meet every weekday starting March 15 thru March 25th 2010.

Holidays for Marines in Afghanistan

I am proud to have a son ( Captain Adam Campbell) serving in the USMC  in Kandahar Afghanistan.  Adam advised that with the holidays approaching the best things to send to the troops  are Phone cards , SKYPE cards and Itune cards. Adam advised that he would disperse any cards to enlisted Marines wishing to call home for the holidays.  My son is a Harrier Pilot assigned to VMA 231.  This squadron has over 200 marines in Kandahar.  VMA 231 is charged with flying close air support (CAS) for the united troops serving in Afghanistan.  VMA 231 is due to return the beginning of summer 2010.  I encourage any one who wishes to donate cards to the marines to write a quick note that can be sent with your gift.

Many of you have already donated DVD’s to the marines. To date we have sent over 500 DVD’s to Afghanistan.  These are in a central location for all to check out. DVD’s are still being accepted by Belmar Recreation and sent to Afghanistan.

Thank you for all you do for our brave Men and Women serving so far from home.

New/Used DVDS for our Armed Forces

dvdsBelmar Recreation is collecting DVDs for our Service men and women stationed at Kandahar Afghanistan. In their down time it is a great distraction to be able to check out a movie from a video library and dream of being somewhere else. For these brave men and women who sacrifice so much,  we would love to be able to assist them in building the DVD library. Any and all movies will be accepted and sent to Kandahar in care of the USMC. The DVDs will be accessible to all service personnel assigned to that base. If you have some movies that you just don’t use or wish to purchase some for the cause,  Please drop them off at the Belmar Gym at 601 Main Street or call Mike Campbell and I can pick them up if that helps. 732-681-3700 dial 9 then 211

Beach Buddies

The Borough of Belmar is pleased to announce a FREE pilot program called “Beach Buddies” due to begin Wednesday, July 22, 2009.  The pilot program will run for three weeks (July 22nd, July 29th and August 5th) from 4-5:30 p.m. at Taylor Pavilion. Using the natural resources in our area the program will provide children ages 3-6 with a diagnosis of Pervasive Developmental Delay (PDD) and Autism an opportunity for sensory exploration and socialization. As the children are involved in activities the parents will be given an opportunity to network with each other.

Many children diagnosed with PDD and autism have great difficulty integrating sounds, movements and visual stimuli. This can present real challenges for families that want to enjoy simple activities like a day at the beach. Children with autism/PDD can easily become over stimulated by the feel of the sand or the sound of the waves or the movement of the water.  The goal of the Beach Buddies Program is to use one to one peer and teacher models to expose children to a variety of sensory activities that will familiarize and desensitize them to some of the stimulation of the beach environment. As the children are playing and working, the parents will have an opportunity to talk with each other and to share strategies. It is the hope of the program that this networking will foster opportunities for families facing challenges to reach out to each other.

For more information please contact Kathy Rogers at 732-642-9555 or Mike Campbell at 732-681-3700 Ext 211 or recreation@belmar.com . Registration will be required and the class will have a maximum of six children.

Pajamas for our troops

IMG_0662

The Boroughs of Belmar and Lake Como are working together in partnership with New Jersey Natural Gas to collect pajamas for our hospitalized troops in Iraq.

Our troops who are hospitalized in Iraq are provided with hospital gowns, but not pajamas. The “Pajamas for our Troops” campaign is an effort to help make these soldiers a little more comfortable during their convalescence. The pajamas we collect will be sent to a forward area hospital in Iraq. Drop-off containers are located in Belmar’s Borough Hall (in the lobby at the Sixth Ave entrance) and at the Taylor Pavilion.

A group of Belmar children participating in Belmar's Arts & Crafts program decorated two bins for the "Pajamas for Our Troops" campaign, sponsored jointly by Belmar, Lake Como and New Jersey Natural Gas.

The “Pajamas for our Troops” campaign is a great way to let our troops know that we are thinking of them. Please only donate new pajamas, for both male and female soldiers. We will need a variety of sizes.

Please help us help our troops.
