Holidays for Marines in Afghanistan

I am proud to have a son ( Captain Adam Campbell) serving in the USMC  in Kandahar Afghanistan.  Adam advised that with the holidays approaching the best things to send to the troops  are Phone cards , SKYPE cards and Itune cards. Adam advised that he would disperse any cards to enlisted Marines wishing to call home for the holidays.  My son is a Harrier Pilot assigned to VMA 231.  This squadron has over 200 marines in Kandahar.  VMA 231 is charged with flying close air support (CAS) for the united troops serving in Afghanistan.  VMA 231 is due to return the beginning of summer 2010.  I encourage any one who wishes to donate cards to the marines to write a quick note that can be sent with your gift.

Many of you have already donated DVD’s to the marines. To date we have sent over 500 DVD’s to Afghanistan.  These are in a central location for all to check out. DVD’s are still being accepted by Belmar Recreation and sent to Afghanistan.

Thank you for all you do for our brave Men and Women serving so far from home.

Kayaking the Shark River

The Yak ShackDown at the Belmar Marina, next to the charter fishing boats, is a little shack — we call it the Yak Shack. That’s the place to go when you want to cool off in the water after a hot day on the beach. Shark River Kayak Co offers guided kayak tours of the Shark River as well as the Shark River basin. You can also rent kayaks and go exploring on your own. All the kayaks are sit-on-top style, and you have the option of renting a single (for one person) or a tandem (built for two). They also offer fishing kayaks, which are set up to hold all your fishing gear and have up to 6 rod holders. Life vests and paddles are included in the rental price.

Visit www.SharkRiverKayaks.com for more information or call (732) 749-0490.

Gazebo Arrives at 8th & Main

As part of continuing plans to improve the lot at the corner of 8th Avenue and Main Street, a small gazebo was put in place as a decorative seating area. The lot will be edged by arborvitae trees and the area around the gazebo will be landscaped with flowers and native shrubs, in a design created by members of Belmar’s Green Team.

Energy Audit Proposals Underway

Clean Energy Logo

Belmar received approval by the New Jersey Clean Energy Program to participate in its Local Government Energy Audit Program. On behalf of the Green Team, Resident Tom Latza, a Rutger’s University Environmental Steward Intern, compiled the comprehensive data needed to apply for audits on the three buildings selected for the first round of audits: Taylor Pavilion, Borough Hall and Union Fire Company. Next, proposals will be sent to state-authorized auditing firms.  The Clean Energy Program subsidizes the cost of the audit, up to 100%. When complete, the audits will recommend cost-justified energy efficiency measures, some of which will be eligible for grants identified by the Clean Energy Program.

Volunteers Plant Main Street Flowers

Rainy Day Planting Rain did not stop nearly a dozen Green Team members from planting flowers in the Main Street barrel planters that had been set on every street corner by the Department of Public Works. Most of the flowers were started from seed in the Magical Garden Community Garden greenhouse on 15th Avenue at E Street, and are expected to fill out the planters nicely in the coming weeks. The use of “homegrown” flowers and volunteer labor were a cost savings for the borough, and everyone involved was glad to be a part of the planting.

Resident Spruces Up Highway 35 “Welcome to Belmar Sign”

welcome-to-belmar-sign-at-hwy-35-0011Belmar resident Jane Anne DiEllo, a member of the Belmar Beautification Committee, planted these flowers at the base of the “Welcome to Belmar” sign, which greets visitors entering Belmar on Highway 35 at 16th Ave. This project completed a three-phase round of flower-planting under the auspices of the Beautification Committee’s “Belmar’s Blooming” campaign. The other two projects were the Roundabout at 6th Ave and C Street, and the Belmar Girl Scouts project at the Lifeguard Boat planter at the Ocean & 1st Ave corner of Schroeder Park. The Beautification Committee is also sponsoring its summer-long Blossom Extravaganza flower-planting campaign for residents and local businesses.

landscaped-rotary-at-6th-c-from-eastWith Memorial Day fast approaching, on Thursday, May 21, 2009 the Belmar Beautification Committee and the Belmar Department of Public Works went to work beautifying the rotary at the intersection of 6th & C Streets. Councilwoman Claire Deicke, who heads up the Belmar Beautification Committee heaped praise on DPW parks employees Kevin Gahan and Joe Nealon, whom she described as “unbelievably helpful” and offered special thanks to DPW Superintendent Andy Meuerle for his cooperation.

This beautification project is just the latest effort of the Belmar Beautification Committee. Councilwoman Deicke reports that the Belmar Girl Scouts will be planting in the old lifeguard boat planter at First and Ocean Avenues, at 9am this Saturday, May 23, 2009, and Beautification Committee member Jane Anne DiEllo, who lives near the 16th and 35 welcome sign, will be planting flowers at that site on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. Once again, the DPW’s expert landscapers will be assisting the Girl Scouts and Jane Anne on these projects.
