Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty and Council members approved continuation of free beach access for Belmar Fire and First Aid Volunteers and included all Monmouth County Fire and First Aid volunteers for Summer 2012.

Mayor Doherty said, “Belmar has a long history of volunteerism which is exemplified by the service to the community by members of the Belmar Fire Department and First Aid Squad. Our Fire and First Aid volunteers keep us safe and come to the rescue 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They respond to our homes, businesses, beach and houses of worship when called, no matter what time of the night or day – and all for no pay! I want them and their families to enjoy themselves and take a break without having to pay for beach access.

It is important to recognize the enormity of the heroism of these volunteers and we want them to know that we support them, they are in our hearts, and we are extremely grateful for the sacrifices they make each and every day.

On behalf of all the families of Belmar, we wish to honor and recognize our volunteers by continuing our program that grants free beach access and this year we are including all of the Fire Department and First Aid Squad volunteers in Monmouth County.

This is a great promotion for our beach to families throughout Monmouth County.”

For those who qualify, simply show the gate attendant a valid municipal government identification card from the municipality where they volunteer.

Polls are now open and will close on Friday, May 11 at 9 a.m. The winner of the poll will be announced that same Friday at noon.

Follow the link http://manasquan.patch.com/articles/readers-choice-favorite-jersey-shore-staycation-spots-11f60cf9 and vote Belmar.

Mayor Matt Doherty said, “Belmar has approximately 1.3 miles of beachfront along Ocean Avenue, and our beaches are constantly in the news as a hot spot for families, young people, and the elderly alike.

Season beach badges are priced at $50—the cheapest among local shore communities—but only $15 for 62 and older or the handicapped. Daily badges are $7 each for patrons sixteen and older, the second-lowest price among the same cluster of other shore towns. We also partner with NJ Transit to create packages which make family beach visits more affordable for our customers; you can save up to $6.50 when you purchase your train ticket in addition a daily beach badge on the train. Coming soon on our Tourism website www.visitbelmarnj.com you will see a new button called “Beach for Cheap” which explains this affordable mass transit connection to Belmar.

The low prices of beach badges do not hinder the quality of the beachfront and boardwalk. The beachfront staff and Public Works diligently clean the areas first thing in the morning and multiple times throughout the day. Smoking is prohibited on our beaches unless in a designated area or in the street off the boardwalk.

Belmar has recently installed Mobi-Mats along a number of its avenues. The hard surface ramps continue down midway through the beachfront and provide access for anyone with a wheelchair, walking aids, or baby stroller. The lifeguards, first aid squad, police, and water rescue team are comprised of highly-qualified individuals who will assist any patron in need.

The activities along the beach provide entertainment for all ages and for all purposes. Children and adults alike can boogie board, kayak, and surf; we even offer a surf camp at 3rd Avenue Beach to take surfing lessons. Club Kid on 8th Avenue offers arts and crafts three times a morning for younger children. Other active beachgoers can set up their own volleyball games at a number of the polls that are stationed along the beach; even if you’re without a net, you can easily join another game.

Our beach season never ends but our official kick-off starts on Friday, May 25th, Memorial Day Weekend, and runs through Monday, September 3rd, Labor Day Weekend. We have traditional boardwalk food and beverage outlets on our boardwalk and plenty of parking available. Families and couples alike can find restaurant all along Ocean Avenue—and even in town—for lunch or dinner after a day of sun and sand.

Belmar is a great town with a good reputation, and we should be recognized for the beaches in which we take so much pride.”

Belmar: Two members of the Belmar Police Department will join colleagues from across the United States at Police Week—May 13-19—in Washington, DC to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind.

This year, the names of 362 officers killed in the line of duty are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These 362 officers include 162 officers who were killed during 2011, plus 199 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now.

Belmar Police Chief /Director of Public Safety Tom Palmisano said, “This bike tour is a fitting tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. These men and woman made the ultimate sacrifice and their heroism should never be forgotten. Participants ride bicycles from over 40 states and outside the US from places like Australia, England, Israel, Italy, India and Canada into Washington, DC. From Belmar Sergeant Tina Scott and Dispatcher Nick Cartmell are riding in the Tour that starts in Howell on May 9th and brings them into Washington, DC on the 12th. While cycling in NJ they will stop at 5 locations where Police Officers died in the line of duty.”

Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty said, “Sergeant Scott and Dispatcher Cartmell are using their own vacation time and money raised through sponsorship. These are clearly two law enforcements members who are dedicated and motivated in keeping the memory alive for those who lost their lives in the line of duty. I respect and applaud their efforts and I am proud to have them in Belmar.”

The Police Unity Tour began in 1997 with 17 officers from New Jersey biking to the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
