Adopt-A-Spot
About the Adopt-a-Spot Program
WHY ADOPT-A-SPOT?
Litter is not only ugly, it’s dangerous! We all know broken glass and aluminum lids can hurt. But trash troubles run way deeper:
• WET WOES – When garbage gets damp from dew and rain, it creates a breeding ground for bugs and is a magnet for toxic debris from car exhausts.
• WINDY WORRIES – When the weather’s dry, the wind blows litter into Shark River, Silver Lake and the ocean. Tens of thousands of dolphins, whales, turtles, fish, birds and other life die each year from trash on the beach and in the water.
Help keep litter pollution out of Belmar: Adopt-a-Spot!
HOW DO I/MY GROUP ADOPT-A-SPOT?
In a nutshell, Adopt-a-Spot means you pick an approved spot and keep it clean year round. Here’s how:
1. You choose a location from a list of Adopt-a-Spot sites in Belmar in the application packet. You may also recommend another site to the Belmar Environmental Commission (BEC), but the BEC and Department of Public Works have final say.
2. You complete the application form and drop it off at Borough Hall (600 Main St.) or mail it to the BEC, PO Box A., Belmar, NJ 07719.
3. When you sign your application form, you make a year-round commitment. Members of the BEC will periodically visit your spot to make sure it is being kept clean. If not, your spot will be given to someone else.
4. You determine how frequently and at what times you visit the spot. Some spots in high-wind, high-use areas may require more frequent clean-ups.
5. Dispose of litter and recyclables in the proper manner. Bottles and cans should be recycled, if possible. Most of the adopted spots have public trash cans on or near them, where you can dispose of your garbage bags. If not, bring the trash to your home cans.
DO I/WE NEED SPECIAL EQUIPMENT?
No special equipment is needed. You should bring your own garbage bags to put the litter in. We also recommend wearing gloves when picking up litter.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Any individual or group who is willing to commit to a spot all year round is eligible. Groups can be families, neighbors, friends, school, scouting, civic or other clubs.
CAN WE PLANT OR DO OTHER THINGS AT OUR SPOT?
You are encouraged to weed or otherwise keep your spot beautiful. If you want to plant or add other decorative items, please email Adopt-a-Spot Coordinator Peggy O’Connor or call Joel DeFalco at the DPW at 732-280-0452.
WILL SIGNS BE POSTED?
Yes, the Department of Public Works will post a sign at your adopted spot with your name or group name, letting residents and visitors know that you are the caretakers of the spot.
WHAT IF WE CAN’T KEEP OUR COMMITMENT?
If you are unable to keep your commitment, or your group changes, please contact the BEC as soon as possible. In addition, the BEC will periodically visit the spots to ensure they are being kept clean. If not, your spot will be taken away and given to another adoptee.
HOW DO I/WE GET STARTED?
You fill out and return an application form. The BEC will review your application at its next meeting and let you know if you were approved for your requested spot. (The BEC meets the second Thursday of every month at 8 p.m. in the courtroom at Borough Hall if you’d like to attend.)
