The Mayor’s Wellness Campaign (MWC) is an effort to educate and motivate Belmar residents to pursue a more healthful life.
The Committee’s first appearance since its inception in April 2008 was at the Family Fun Volunteer Day, where the group distributed health information. Their August 2008 Walk with the Mayor attracted 50 residents to the boardwalk despite drenching rain. Once the summer sun was a distant memory, representatives from the American Cancer Society came to town and provided 100 residents with Dermascan screenings, which evaluate skin damage due to sun overexposure. Come October, the MWC coordinated a health fair at the Taylor Pavilion that featured health care professionals, providers and pharmacy reps and offered free health screenings and evaluations; the event was so successful that the MWC will present the health fair this October 10th. MWC Committee member Christine Stoner, a certified nutrition counselor, gave presentations concerning nutritious meal preparation to parent groups at Belmar Elementary and St. Rose Grammar School.
The Mayor’s Wellness Committee is: Connie Gutierrez, Christine Stoner, Mike Campbell and Claire Deicke. For more information about the October 10th Health Fair to be held at Taylor Pavillion, contact Claire Deicke at ctd@verizon.net.
