AVP2001 June McKim The AVP released its 2010 Tournament Schedule today, and announced that Belmar will be one of only 12 locations on the AVP tour this season, and the only location in the northeast. The Belmar AVP event will be returning to Belmar over the June 25-27, 2010 weekend. “We’re very excited to have the AVP back in Belmar this summer,” said Belmar Ken Pringle. “The AVP event is extremely popular with Belmar’s families, and we’re a favorite event location for the ast coast beach volleyball community.” To view the AVP’s press release and the entire schedule, click here.

Last season, the AVP decided to move the event to Maryland, citing too few sponsors in the New Jersey market due to economic conditions. This season will mark the 17th time in the past 20 years the event has been held in Belmar.

Breslin Monument Returned to Belmar

February 10, 2010 by admin

breslin monument 012 On February 9, 2010, after more than 50 years at Fort Monmouth, the Pat & Sandy Breslin monument was finally returned to the Borough of Belmar. With the help of H.T. Hall Monuments of Spring Lake Heights, Belmar’s DPW workers retrieved the monument. It is being stored at the Public Works Department until later this spring when it will be returned to the Belmar Marina and given a permanent place of honor on the renovated Ninth Avenue Pier.

The Breslin monument has a storied place in Belmar history. Oien August 15, 1949, Pat and Sandy Breslin, the unassuming proprietors of the marina’s luncheonette and boat rental concession, dedicated a small granite monument outside their establishment. The inscription read: “To the glory of God, and to those who served, fought and died that our flag may forever fly in honor and peace.” Little did Pat and Sandy know that this small act – and their countless quiet acts of generosity that had preceded it – would ripple across our nation, and lead all the way to the White House.

The story of the Breslin monument began nearly eight years earlier. On December 8, 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor, while our stunned nation tried to digest the enormity of what had transpired, Pat and Sandy immediately grasped that everyone would need to do their part to support the war effort. They wrote a letter to the Congress in which they offered their boating and fishing pier in the Belmar marina at no cost to our soldiers, sailors and marines.

They kept their pledge. Not only through the war years, but for another dozen years after the war ended, Pat and Sandy fed countless servicemen and women and lent them fishing tackle and row boats. They refused to accept a dime in return. They would even insist these servicemen use their telephone to call home and talk to their loved ones.

Over the years, Pat and Sandy Breslin’s quiet hospitality and generosity became legendary. They received thousands of letters from all over the world, often from the servicemen themselves, but also from their families, and even from complete strangers who thanked them for what they were doing. As the years passed, many servicemen would come back to visit, not so much for the free hospitality, as to thank Pat and Sandy again in person. All too often during these visits, Pat and Sandy would hear about those who had shared their hospitality but hadn’t made it back from the war. The monument they dedicated 60 years ago today, was their way of expressing their gratitude to all who served, and especially those who gave their lives.

The dedication of the Breslin monument 60 years ago, was far from the end of the story. A few years later, in 1953, Pat and Sandy were invited the White House, where they were honored by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. A year later, they would also receive medals from Cardinal Spellman.

In 1957, Pat and Sandy’s concession license wasn’t renewed due to a planned renovation of the marina. The Breslin monument was put in storage until September, 1960, when Pat and Sandy wrote to President Eisenhower to request his help in finding a permanent location for the memorial. Soon after, Major General William D. Hamlin, the then Commanding General of Fort Monmouth, offered to accept the monument at Fort Monmouth. In April of 1961, the Breslin memorial was officially accepted by Fort Monmouth in a formal ceremony complete with an honor guard and military band.

But for the impending closing of Fort Monmouth, the story of Pat & Sandy Breslin and their monument might have ended here. In the fall of 2006, unaware that it had been moved, Sandy’s grandson, Norm Eaise, visited the Belmar marina to look for the monument he had heard so much about as a child. When he couldn’t find it, he contacted Mayor Pringle, and with the assistance of our then Borough Clerk Marg Plummer, Congressman Frank Pallone’s office and the Fort Monmouth Historical Office, the monument was tracked down to Fort Monmouth. A few months later, with the support of Mr. Eaise and his family and the Belmar Historical Council, the Borough of Belmar made a formal request that the Breslin monument be returned to Belmar.

If all goes as planned, the Breslin monument will soon be given a permanent place of honor on the newly renovated Ninth Ave Pier at the Belmar marina. We plan to hold a formal rededication ceremony for the monument on Memorial Day, May 31, 2010.

Mayor and Council seek bidders for Seasonal Restaurant Concession on Ninth Ave Pier

Ninth Ave Pier via webcamWith piles of snow on the ground, and another blizzard on the way, it’s hard to envision a beautiful July evening enjoying dinner and cocktails on a pier with a spectacular view of the Belmar marina and the sun setting over the Shark River. But that’s the sizzle the Mayor and Council are hoping will attract more than 80 area restaurateurs who have been invited to attend an informational meeting on February 11, 2010 at 9 a.m. at the Belmar Municipal Building. The purpose of the meeting is to outline the Borough’s plans to bid out a concession to operate a seasonal bar and grill on the Ninth Avenue Pier, and get feedback from interested bidders so that the Borough can properly prepare bid specs for the project.

Over the past decade, the Borough has upgraded its marina into one of the finest facilities of its kind on the east coast, including more than 70 slips available for transient boaters who can rent on a daily or weekly basis. This spring, the Borough will start the next phase of upland marina improvements, which are designed to make the already popular marina a top destination for transient boaters in the New York metropolitan area, as well for land-based visitors and especially the residents of Belmar. These improvements will include the renovation this spring of the Ninth Avenue pier to include not a seasonal bar and grill, but also landscaping and seating areas for the public, a nautical flag pole and memorial area to honor Pat and Sandy Breslin, areas equipped for festival or seasonal vendors to display their goods and a booth where visitors can book kayak rentals, charter fishing, diving and sightseeing trips, eco-tours other activities.

The restaurant concession will be offered with a Special Concessionaire Permit from the State of New Jersey to serve alcohol pursuant to N.J.S.A. 33:1-42 and N.J.A.C. 13:2-5.2 (liquor license). The permit will be subject to limited hours of service and other conditions, which will be discussed at the February 11 informational session.

Currently there is only one location for service of food in the marina, a luncheonette located in the Borough’s Harbor Master building. This concession is also currently up for lease. The Mayor and Council are preparing bid specifications for both locations, and would like input from experienced restaurant owners, who may be interested in leasing this space and/or the Ninth Avenue Pier. Although 80 restaurateurs have been invited to attend, the informational meeting is open to all interested potential bidders, as well as the public at large, and the Borough plans to use information and ideas obtained during the informational meeting when preparing the bid and lease documents.

This bid opportunity is not in lieu of, but rather in addition to, the Borough’s longer-term plan to replace the Harbor Master building with a much larger, permanent building which will include a fine-dining restaurant with Concession Permit License on the second floor, as well as a variety of first-floor uses including a casual foods, ice cream, bait, tackle and chandlery, and other marine-related retail uses. The Borough has applied to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for a CAFRA permit to develop this larger facility, most likely pursuant to a long-term ground lease, and will hold additional meetings in the future once the necessary permit has been obtained.

Anyone interested in attending the February 11, 2010 meeting or in leasing the new outdoor concessions on the Ninth Avenue pier and/or the current luncheonette, and would like to review either the draft lease agreements should contact Borough Administrator Robbin Kirk at rkirk@boro.belmar.nj.us

with Dentistry From The Heart

Belmar, NJ      March 26, 2010 – Dr. Hanapole is out to change lives by offering free smiles to anyone who needs dental work, as he hosts the latest event for Dentistry From The Heart (DFTH) on Friday, March 26, 2010.

Dr. Hanapole is being joined by Dr. Larry Gardner of Manasquan, Dr. Robert Belott of Sea Girt and Dr. Dennis Sternberg of Freehold and many volunteers to help approximately 100 people in need of fillings, extractions and cleanings.  This is their first year of participation and they are really looking forward to its success.

Dentistry From The Heart is a national non-profit organization with a simple mission – making people smile. Founded in 2001 by a Dr. Vincent Monticciolo in New Port Richey, Florida, DFTH was created to aid those in need, including the growing population of under-insured Americans.  Over 100 million Americans lack dental insurance, and over 29 percent of adults have untreated cavities. Without events like DFTH, dental care simply isn’t an option for many of the uninsured. To date, DFTH has helped more than 25,000 patients and provided over $5.5 million in dental care.

The event will take place on Friday, March 26, 2010 at HANAPOLE DENTAL CARE in Belmar.   Starting at 9:oo am, Dr. Hanapole and his volunteers will treat the first 100 patients, or however many they can service by 5:30pm.  For more information, visit www.HANAPOLEDENTALCARE.com or the organization’s national website at www.dentistryfromtheheart.org.
