Stormy weather can’t stop Belmar’s surfers from seeing out Summer ‘09 with a wave

Despite hurricane-like weather on Thursday that left Ocean Avenue littered with banks of displaced sand, organizers are saying the this year’s weekend-long Belmar Pro was the most successful yet. Once the weather let up, surfers were treated to 4′ waves, a glassy-smooth ocean and an excellent turnout. Check the Belmar Pro website for a complete wrap-up, photo and video.
The Belmar Pro wasn’t the only surfing event in town this weekend; while the Pro raged on at the south end of town, 5,000 people swarmed the beach between 6th and 8th Avenues to participate in the 5th Annual Beach Bash, hosted by the Autism Family Services of New Jersey. Commentary on that outstanding event can be found here.

Also in surfing news: the Belmar Arts Council’s surf art show “The Innermost Limits of Pure Stroke” officially opened this Sunday, September 13 at the Boatworks (608 River Road). The show runs from through October 2nd and benefits SurfAid International, an organization that supports community-based health programs across the world. Visit the Art Council’s website for more information on this and other art initiatives.
