For the past few weeks, early morning visitors to Belmar’s beach and boardwalk have been treated to a near shore view of a group of porpoises looking for breakfast. Boaters have been reporting similar sightings. The small pod, which appears to number 8 to 10 porpoises, has likely been attracted to the area by large schools of bunker this season, which also have attracted the attention of striped bass, a favorite of fishermen along the Jersey Shore.

This photo gives as sense of how close to shore the porpoises are. This photo was taken at 19th Ave on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Contributed by Marshall Boxer.
