Belmar Arts Council Announces the 1st Belmar Urban Myth Competition

May 21, 2010 by artsadmin1

It’s often heard that everyone has a Belmar story, but if you know of a Belmar urban myth or, if you want to make one up-no matter how silly or nonsensical it may be-now is your chance to get it out there. This summer at the Boatworks the Urban Myth Show opens with the awards reception on August 7 and runs through August 27. You can use any type of art-form, from a simple photograph or hand drawing to a video or stage play. All submissions will be judged on an individual basis-don’t worry if you submit anything that is on an amatuer level. The judges will consider the whole entry. The council will hold writing workshops and help sessions on May 27th and June 10. Submissions must be dropped off at the BAC Gallery at 608 River Road in Belmar on July 31. The entries should be no longer than three minutes and must depict an urban myth that is somehow associated with Belmar.

Belmar Arts Council Grant Reception

Belmar, NJ, May 10, 2010 – The Belmar Arts Council recently celebrated receipt of a grant from the New Jersey Cultural Trust with a wine and cheese reception and show of local children’s artwork. Joining BAC members and trustees in announcing the grant were Senator Sean Kean, Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini and Assemblyman David Rible, along with Belmar Borough Council members Matt Doherty, Richard Wright and Brian Magovern.

The grant helps fund arts administrator Brenda Yarnold’s position for one year. Through establishment of this position, the BAC hopes to grow membership, build its financial base, expand community outreach and enhance quality programming.

The New Jersey Cultural Trust, a division of the Department of State, was created in July 2000 as a public/private partnership to help ensure a stable and healthy nonprofit cultural industry in New Jersey that is sustainable even in the toughest of economic times. The NJ State Council for the Arts solicits and reviews applications from arts organizations and recommends awards to the Cultural Trust. To be eligible an organization must first be designated as “qualified” by the New Jersey Cultural Trust.

The Belmar Arts Council provides a wide range of arts programs designed to enrich the lives of Belmar’s artists, residents and visitors of all ages. This year’s programming includes monthly art shows at the Boatworks Gallery on River Road, as well as exhibits at local businesses, with work currently on display at Central Jersey Bank and Matisse Restaurant. The BAC also offers art classes for adults and children; photography, painting and drawing groups; musical evenings with the BAC Jam Band; Kids Art Day and the Belmar Art Walk; and programs of special interest to artists, from novice to professional. Working with the Tourism Commission, the BAC also expects to complete four murals on Main Street this summer.

The programs of the Belmar Arts Council are funded by dues, donations and grants. BAC’s events are made possible in part by the Monmouth County Arts Council through funding from the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, through the County Historical Commission, and the New Jersey Stats Council on the Arts/Department of State a Partner Agency of the National Endowment of the Arts.

Dogs on the Beach

As the summer season approaches Belmar residents are reminded that the seasonal regulations for dog walking on the beach are about to change.   In Belmar,  dogs are not allowed on the boardwalk and dogs are prohibited year round on the Natural Beach between the Belmar Fishing Club and the Shark River Inlet.  All of these areas are clearly marked with signs.

You can read the Belmar Ordinances, Chapter XVIII section 2.7  here.    Belmar residents are still allowed to walk dogs on the beach until April 30th when the new seasonal rules take effect.  Of course,  all dog walkers are required to have a leash and a bag or device to remove droppings.  Until then, enjoy the beach with your best friend and then we all have to make room for our summer visitors.
