Spooky Storm Blows Through Belmar

belmar-storm-pic-1 If you live in Belmar long enough, you’re bound to see some unusual weather events. And the thunder storm that blew through town on Friday evening was certainly one of them. At first, the most striking feature was the unusual cloud formations that swirled overhead in advance of the storm. Afterwards, it was the eerie yellow-orange light that illuminated the entire sky with a distinct end-of-the-world kind of glow. In a word, spooky. Special thanks to Emily K. Ellis for these great photographs of the storm.

Even Before There Was Sidoroff’s There Was John’s Blue Lunch

image0-1 Long time residents and visitors to Belmar fondly remember Sidoroff’s, the popular, but now vacant, hot dog and hamburg stand at the corner of 19th and Ocean Avenues. In its heyday, it featured some of the best hamburgers and hot dogs anywhere, not to mention ice cold Hires Root Beer served in frosted mugs. Some of my favorite memories of Sidoroff’s were those rainy days and evenings, when they would roll down canvas flaps to create a sheltered seating area under the overhang. And I remember Mrs. Sidoroff, who always wore her hair up in a bun, and was as much a fixture in front of the counter, as the old Hires Root Beer Barrel was the behind the counter. Her old-fashioned cash register didn’t actually do any math, so she would tally up the cost for each patron on a little pad, and then enter the total on the register.

In its later years, Sidoroff’s became THE place for breakfast on weekends, especially if your idea of a great breakfast included the Jersey Shore delicacy of pork roll with a fried egg on a hard roll. Of course, all of this was eaten around painted picnic tables, and washed down with terrific coffee served out of mismatched mugs.

But what few remaining Belmartians remember is that another Belmar classic occupied that spot for decades before Sidoroff’s. John Blue’s Lunch operated at that location during the 1940’s and well into the 1950’s. We’d be grateful to anyone who could provide better dates for us as to when John Blue’s Lunch first opened, and when the transition to Sidoroff’s occurred, and any other memories about this classic Belmar food stand.

Cook-out celebrates opening of the Belmar-Taurosa Family Skate Park

skateboard-park-celebration-001More than a hundred residents and skaters turned out on Thursday evening for a cook-out to celebrate the opening of the new Belmar-Taurosa Family Skate Park, and to thank all those who helped make it a reality. Barry and the Penetrators provided great music for the event. (In between sets, they even tried out the new park with their skateboards!) Bill Merkler, Dave Kinsel and Rob Wall took turns at the grill, cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs for all the hungry skaters and their families who were in attendance.

Former Councilman Bill Merkler, who led the effort to raise money for the part, took the microphone for a few minutes to thank all those who helped make the new park a reality. He gave special thanks to to Bob and Carol Taurosa, whose very substantial contribution toward the park made the effort a reality, and in whose honor the Belmar-Taurosa Family Skate Park has been named. He also gave thanks to the Mayor & Council for their support for the project; to Borough Administrator Robbin Kirk, who was instrumental in making the park a reality; to Superintendent Andy Meuerle and the Department of Public Works for their efforts in installing new fencing around the park, and to Bob Losito of the Proskateboard Shop, who gave invaluable design advice and other technical assistance for the park. Bill Merkler also thanked all those who made contributions large and small to help make the park a reality.
