The only catch is that you have to be a Cablevision or Comcast high-speed Internet customer. On Thursday, May 14, Cablevision launched this latest service expansion in Belmar and at nine other train stations in Monmouth County.

This is just the latest expansion of Cablevision’s Wi-Fi wireless access service in Belmar for Optimum Online customers. According to Cablevision’s Wi-Fi coverage map, all of Belmar’s downtown is within reach of a Cablevision Wi-Fi signal, as are Belmar’s beaches from Eighth to Eighteenth Avenues.

belmar-elementary-schoolAt its regular meeting on Wednesday evening, May 13, 2009, the Mayor & Council voted to cut $89,000 from the School Board Budget, which had been defeated by voters on April 21 by a vote of 364 to 258. The Mayor & Council’s decision was reached after a special workshop meeting attended by a large number of school supporters, all of whom urged the Mayor & Council to support the budget. During the workshop meeting, Borough Administrator and Chief Financial Officer Robbin Kirk outlined $124,000 in potential cuts she had identified, which included a salary freeze for administrative staff at the school, and a 1% cut in teacher salaries. Teacher salaries, however, are set by contact, and the teachers’ union has declined to re-open the contract or consider a voluntary wage reduction. Following the workshop meeting, the Mayor and members of the Council met individually with School Superintendent Paul Shappirio and School Board Secretary Loretta Hill and in an effort to reach a mutually acceptable consensus, and ultimately settled on the $89,000 cut.

Council President Merry Brennan recused herself from the vote and the discussions on the budget because her husband, Tom Brennan, is an employee of the Belmar Elementary School.
